Hugh serves as Editor of NAR’s On Common Ground magazine, staff executive of the Smart Growth Advisory Board and co-staff executive of the Sustainability Advisory Group. He oversees resources such as the growth polling program, large association grants, and smart growth education curriculum. He helps REALTOR® associations access and leverage these resources that support community engagement around issues of land use and transportation. Hugh has over thirty years of experience in planning and transportation. Prior to joining NAR in 2005, he worked for a transportation consulting firm, a research group focused on energy efficiency and the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy where he focused on repurposing abandoned urban rail corridors into trails. He contributed to the American Planning Association’s publication titled “Planning and Urban Design Standards” as well as “Trails for the 21st Century: a planning, design, and management manual” published by Island Press and authored peer-reviewed papers presented and published by the National Academy of Science’s Transportation Research Board.
