Since becoming a veterinarian, Dr. Stephan Schaefbauer has served her profession, her country and her local communities through her commitment to safeguarding animal and public health. She has served as the Area Veterinarian in Charge for USDA Animal Plant and Health Inspection Services, Veterinary Services in Minnesota for the past six years. She obtained her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of Georgia (UGA). Following conferment of her DVM from the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Schaefbauer headed to the University of Minnesota to pursue a masters of public health degree and a residency at the Center for Animal Health and Food Safety. After completing her MPH and residency in 2008 she served as an Import Risk Analyst in the National Center for Import and Export. She began working as an Epidemiology Officer in 2010 in Raleigh, NC and served in the same position in Des Moines, Iowa in 2014. In 2014, Dr. Schaefbauer’s dedication to public service was recognized when she was presented with the APHIS Women of Character, Courage and Commitment Award. In 2016, University of Georgia recognized her accomplishments with the Young Achiever Award as well as profiling her as a “40 Under 40” award recipient. In 2016, Dr. Schaefbauer began working as the Area Veterinarian in Charge for VS-Minnesota. Dr. Schaefbauer has served on the Board of Directors for the National Association of Federal Veterinarians and for the City of Lakes Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Incorporated. Additional past leadership positions include serving as President of the American Association of Food Safety Veterinarians, Vice President of Education for the Centennial Toastmasters, and serving on the AVMA Diversity Taskforce. Overall her favorite thing to do is spend time with her husband and their children (9yo son and 7yo daughter).
