Abstract

The ancient city of Parion is a very important harbor and trade city located in Kemer Village of Biga District in the present-day Çanakkale Province on the Anatolian side at the exit of the Dardanelles Strait from the Marmara Sea. Regarding the foundation and colonization of the city, the ancient sources mention the cities of Paros, Miletus, and Eythrai. In line with the data provided by ancient sources, modern sources refer to the same cities, but it is observed that the island of Thasos is added to the list. The scientific archaeological excavations carried out in the ancient city of Parion and the data obtained from these excavations shed some light on the colonization of the city.

This study will first express the opinions and suggestions of ancient and modern sources about the colonization process of the ancient city of Parion, which is said to have been founded in 709 B.C.E. Then, opinions on the colonization of the city will be expressed based on the data obtained at the end of the excavations and researches carried out in the ancient city of Parion.
