Starting Off on the Right Paw - The Basics of Puppy Behavior and Problem Prevention

  Small Animal I-Behavior

Behavior problems in dogs are the number one reason for relinquishment to shelters and are a top cause for owner-requested euthanasia. Many serious problems can be prevented if appropriate care is given during the early, sensitive weeks of a puppy's life. This session walks through the behavioral developmental periods in dogs and how each shapes adult behavior. Furthermore a brief discussion of preventing problems in a number of common aspects of canine behavior will be presented. Finally, we will review early 'red flag' warning signs of abnormal behavior in puppies and how to mitigate these issues before it is too late.
