Cannabis in Veterinary Practice Part I: Cannabis Constituents and their Biological Targets

  Small Animal III-Alternative Medicine

This first part of a two-part series on veterinary medical cannabis covers the pharmacology of the active constituents of the cannabis plant. This includes details regarding the major, minor, and acidic raw cannabinoids, in addition to the terpenes and flavonoids. The biological targets of these plant molecules--the membrane receptors, enzymes and endogenous ligands of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is discussed in detail and describes why the ECS is an integral part of our naturally-occurring homeostatic mechanisms governing health and disease.
